lesson 9 - tithing

Having established the fundamental principle that God is the OWNER of all things and that we are STEWARDS accountable to God for all He has given us, this lesson considers what we are to do with that which
God entrusts to us.

WHAT DOES THE NEW TESTAMENT SAY ABOUT FINANCES?

  • The Gospels contain more warnings about money and its misuse than any other subject,
  • One in every four verses in Matthew, Mark, and Luke deals with money.
  • One in every six verses in the New Testament deals with or makes reference to money in some way.
  • Almost half of the parables of Jesus refer to money in one way or another. He gives special warnings against greed.
  • The first apostle to fall was Judas. Because of the love of money, he sold Christ for silver coins he never lived to spend! John 12:4-8, 13:27; Acts 1:25; Matthew 26:14-16, 27:3-10
  • The first sin in the early church concerned the giving of money. Satan entered into the scene of God’s glory on the early church through greed, when the spirit of giving was on the people. Acts 5:1-10.
  • The sin of “Simony” is seeking to buy the gifts of God with money. Acts 8:14-24
  • Two New Testament words whose Greek numerical value equals 666, are wealth and tradition. Revelation 13:16-18. This also is the number of the antichrist, and he will control the world with the power to buy or sell.

WHAT WARNINGS DOES THE NEW TESTAMENT GIVE ABOUT MONEY?

I Timothy 6:7-10 – Money is not evil in itself; money is neither moral nor immoral. It is the LOVE of money which is the root of all evil.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE TEACH ABOUT TITHES AND OFFERINGS?

  • We are to bring our tithes and offerings to God’s storehouse. Malachi 3:7-12
  • The storehouse is the place where the people of God are fed. The storehouse for the Christian is the local church.

IS TITHING FOR TODAY?

Yes. The Old and New Testaments confirm the truth that believers are to give a tithe (one-tenth) of their income.

  • Tithing before the Law
    • Abraham (Made a covenant with God through tithing). Genesis 14:18-20
    • Jacob (Made a covenant with God through tithing). Genesis 28:22
  • Tithing under the Law The Mosaic covenant contained tithing for Israel. Leviticus 27:30-33; Numbers 18:20-32
  • Tithing under Grace Jesus confirmed tithing. Tithing did not originate with the Law but came BEFORE the law. Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42, 18:12; Hebrews 7:1-21
  • If a person does not tithe, he is robbing God. The tithe belongs to God. If a person only tithes but gives no
offerings, he is giving nothing of his own to God. God challenges us, “prove me now, with tithes and offerings.” Malachi 3:8-10 The meaning of the word “tithe” is one-tenth. Proverbs 3:9

WHAT ARE SOME PRINCIPLES OF GIVING?

  • Give ourselves to the Lord first. II Corinthians 8:5
  • Give willingly. II Corinthians 8:3, 12
  • Give cheerfully (hilariously). II Corinthians 9:7
  • Give generously, liberally. II Corinthians 8:2, 9:13
  • Give proportionately. II Corinthians 9:6, 8:14-15
  • Give regularly. I Corinthians 16:1-2
  • Give systematically. II Corinthians 9:7
  • Give lovingly. II Corinthians 8:24
  • Give thankfully. II Corinthians 9:11-12
  • Give as a ministry to the Lord and His saints. II Corinthians 9:12-13

A LEGAL giver gives because he has to.

A LOVING giver gives because he loves to.

It is impossible to outgive God!
